Introduction to learning

In this area you manage the wide range of learning assets in the CLS — creating most of them, tagging them, enrolling users, arranging payment, marking tests, and endorsing learning conducted elsewhere. Learning assets can be correlated with competencies and continuing professional development (CPD). This area also includes a powerful facility for reporting on data across the entire system.

A learning asset is intellectual property that helps users learn or tests their learning. Learning assets take many forms — see Manage Learning Assets for more.

All learning assets need to be linked to a catalogue item so users can enrol or be enrolled in them. Once created, enrolments are monitored and managed in this section.

Manage Learning overview

A catalogue item and some learning assets can optionally be linked to certificates. Users receive a certificate when they complete the enrolment.

Catalogue items and some learning assets can also be linked to tags. Beyond their use in CPD, tags and tag types play an important role in sorting, organising, locating, and laying out content in the CLS. Tags play an analogous role to groups in user management.

You can link competencies to catalogue items and some learning assets so that on successful completion of a catalogue item, learners are automatically awarded the linked competencies. Competency requirements can be set for specified users, and managers can run reports to check compliance.

Catalogue items also work with Continuing professional development. A CPD plan requires users to accumulate a specified number of points against certain tags. Users do this by completing catalogue items linked to those tags. Managers can run reports to track CPD status.

Most tests in the CLS are automatically marked. For those that aren't, markers are notified and access this section to mark the tests and assessments — see Marking.

A number of standard reports can be run on the system. Customisable reports provide a powerful way to manage the system by running unique and detailed reports on the components of the CLS.
